Art for Change

At the peak of the Black Lives Matter movement, Steven Taylor was shot and killed by a San Leandro police officer which sparked citizens to come together to fight for the reformation of the policing system in the city. One of those groups was Art for Change which was started by local artists who wanted to share their message through art pieces.

In collaboration with other artists and community organizers, a series of murals were created on different barricaded storefronts. At the same time, a plan came together to create a street mural that would be painted “Black Lives Matter”.

A year after the incident and following actions taken by the community and city government, the murals were now stored away and the activists continue their advocacy work. The murals had been stored in a dilapidated facility and had been later digitally archived for placement in the San Leandro Museum as well as a recollection of the events in 2020.
